J. Joksimović: Merkel revived the enlargement process

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statement that Europe will truly be united only with Western Balkan countries in it has unequivocally revived the enlargement policy, which many intentionally moved to the sidelines during the pre-election period and which was belittled by enlargement policy opponents”, Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimović told Novosti, commenting on the Chancellor’s position regarding the future prospects of the region.

“This is Chancellor’s well-known position, which has geopolitical foundations in German foreign policy, and it is no coincidence that she stated this at the celebration of the Pan-European Picnic that symbolises a united Europe of all its nations, and in the presence of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán who is a huge and loud supporter of the enlargement policy and who particularly supports Serbia’s European path”, said Joksimović for Novosti.

She has stated that it is important that Merkel clearly conveyed this position at the time when the new constellation of European institutions is gaining its final form.

“I do not foster ungrounded optimism nor am I a Euro-fanatic because I reiterate how important it is to remain responsibly and decidedly consistent on our European path; on the contrary, I believe and I know that Serbia is part of a well-grounded and strong Europe and that everyone recognises our historical and cultural contribution, along with our economic and human potential”, concluded the Minister.
