On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in front of the "Menorah in Flames" monument on the Danube Quay in Belgrade, Minister of European Integration of the Republic of Serbia, Nemanja Starović, delivered a speech in which he highlighted the enduring obligation to preserve the truth and the culture of remembrance.
The Minister emphasised that the Shoah was not merely a historical event, but a profound moral wound of humanity and a warning of what happened when hatred became institutionalised and indifference toward others turned into a social norm. He stressed that remembrance of the Holocaust was not a matter of choice, but an obligation toward the victims, the truth, and future generations, as well as a clear barrier against any attempt at historical revisionism.
He particularly warned about the alarming rise of antisemitism in Europe, as well as about phenomena that relativised or downplayed the crimes of Nazism and its allies, noting that the denial and justification of crimes represented the first step toward their repetition.
The Minister underlined that the culture of remembrance was one of the foundations of a modern democratic society and of European values, and that the Republic of Serbia remained firmly committed to preserving historical truth, unequivocally condemning all forms of antisemitism, and preventing the rehabilitation of ideologies based on hatred.
