Free Public Internet in 500 Municipalities Across the Western Balkans

As part of the European Union's Growth Plan, 500 municipalities from Western Balkan countries can apply for free public Wi-Fi internet, the Europe House announced today.
This initiative will provide free Wi-Fi hotspots in 500 municipalities, with internet access installed in public spaces such as squares, parks, libraries, museums, and schools, ensuring free and reliable internet access for both residents and visitors, according to the statement.

Municipalities will receive comprehensive support, including the supply and installation of Wi-Fi equipment, internet service, and maintenance. In return, they are required to maintain the service beyond the initial funding period, ensuring its long-term sustainability and impact.

The public call is open to municipalities in Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, so-called Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia and the applications must be submitted by a mayor, an official employed by the municipality, or a member of the municipal council.

The programme is funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and is inspired by a successful initiative that provided free Wi-Fi to nearly 9,000 municipalities across Europe.

The application deadline is 28 April.
