EU grants EUR 184 million assistance to SCG from CARDS programme

Brussels, 11 April 2005 – European Commission has granted EUR 184 million of financial support to Serbia and Montenegro through the EU’s CARDS programme of assistance to West Balkan countries.

 

According to the European Commission, CARDS programme assistance for this year envisages special support to Kosovo, amounting to EUR 54 million and the assistance to Macedonia at the amount of EUR 34.5 million.

 

The Commission reports that this financial support is aimed at strengthening of democracy and the rule of law, human rights’ respect, development of civil society and media, as well the establishment of market economy.

 

CARDS funds are also allocated for "permanent economic rehabilitation, promotion of social development and structural reforms".

 

The assistance is modiefied according to the needs and development of political situation in the West Balkan countries; hence the focus is transferred from infrastructural building and reconciliation to the development of administration bodies and legislation, as well as gradual harmonisation with European norms and possible alignment with EU legislation, which is enforced in all EU member states.
