In the north of Banat, in the border town of Majdan, on the territory of the Novi Kneževac municipality, the final conference of the project “Enhancing tourism in Banat cross-border area by capitalizing of the potential of Parta and Majdan archaeological sites” was organised, realised within the framework of the Interreg-IPA Cross-border Cooperation Romania-Serbia Programme.
In addition to the representatives of the project teams, the event was attended by the President of the Assembly of AP Vojvodina Ištvan Pastor, Ambassador of Romania to Serbia Silvia Davidoiu, Special Advisor in the Ministry of European Integration Tibor Pinter, President of the Municipality of Novi Kneževac Radovan Uverić, representatives of the Romanian Timiş County, Provincial Secretary for Regional Development, Interregional Cooperation and Local Self-Government Aleksandar Sofić and Director of the European Affairs Fund of AP Vojvodina Ognjen Dopuđ.
Two significant archaeological sites on the border territory of Banat – the Neolithic sanctuary in Parta, as well as the Manastirište site in Majdan, where the Christian monastery of St. Đorđe is located – will become more accessible to experts, but also to the general public on both sides of the border, owing to the implementation of the cross-border project. It is a continuation of the successful bilateral cooperation between Romania and Serbia.
Owing to the abundant findings, both localities should be mandatory points on the tourist map of Banat in the future. The project itself is designed as a good way to initiate and intensify cooperation between North Banat and Temišvar region, which is a good indicator of future border cooperation.
A Visitor’s Centre has been opened at the archaeological site in Majdan, and the archaeological park is ready for future guests. In addition to the interesting tourist offer, further cooperation between institutions, cultural institutions and museums on both sides of the border is important, which implies an exchange of knowledge and positive effects on the development of the region.
