New edition of the Manual for Translating the Acquis Communautaire

The Ministry of European Integration, in cooperation with the Republic Secretariat for Legislation, has published the sixth amended edition of the Manual for Translating the Acquis Communautaire.

The aim of this Manual is to facilitate the translation process, while it can also be used in all stages of revision, as this is a single process whose purpose is to establish standards and achieve high quality of translated texts.

The Manual for Translating the Acquis Communautaire is divided into three sections. The first section gives an overview of the types of legal acts, their characteristics and forms. The second section is dedicated to the translation process itself, including general and specific instructions for translation, while the third section is intended to present general terms related to the European Union.

The Ministry of European Integration acts as the central coordination body for all stages of the preparation of the Serbian version of the acquis communautaire, and is responsible for creating the relevant term base and translation memories, reporting and setting priorities for translation in cooperation with other public administration authorities. Within the process of the preparation of the Serbian version of the acquis communautaire, the Republic Secretariat for Legislation, line ministries and other public administration authorities are tasked with legal and expert revision of translations. The final verification of translated texts is performed by a special Working group for verification, composed of representatives of all institutions participating in the process.

The preparation of the acquis communautaire in the official language of a candidate country is a necessary condition for membership and a great challenge faced by all countries preparing for full membership in the European Union.
