J. Joksimović: Judicial reform will continue through broad public consultations

Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimović has assessed that Serbian citizens have demonstrated readiness for a structural and systemic change that strengthens democratic institutions and the rule of law, and has added that a set of judicial laws will be prepared in the upcoming period, which will enable the application of the new constitutional provisions.

In her statement to Tanjug, Joksimović has stressed that judicial laws will be prepared through a full and inclusive advisory process with legal professionals, academic community, civil sector and the wider public, as well as with the Venice Commission.

According to her, this will be done so as to achieve the highest standards that Serbian citizens expect in every segment of the reform.

Noting that Serbian citizens demonstrated maturity by voting for the constitutional amendments at the referendum, Joksimović has said that, by accepting the Act on the amendment to the Constitution of Serbia, they have shown that they understand the EU accession process and all the related reforms as useful and beneficial for the broadest social interests.

“And in this way, we have entered the circle of the most advanced European nations and countries that are ready and mature for the adoption of the highest standards of the rule of law”, said Joksimović.

Joksimović believes that the result of the referendum is credible proof that Serbia and its citizens deserve faster progress on the European path, because, in the most difficult years for the modern humankind and in times of global challenges for democracy brought on by the pandemic, Serbian society has demonstrated a high level of democratic knowledge, trust in the rule of law and strength to work towards strengthening human and civil rights in difficult times.
