J. Joksimović and Kukan: The European Parliament recognises Serbia’s constructive and active role

Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimović has spoken with Chair of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee Eduard Kukan on the continuation of Serbia’s European integration, pace of the implementation of reforms, situation in the region, migrant crisis and other important topics.

Joksimović has thanked Kukan for the support that he and the Committee he chairs have for years provided to Serbia in the accession process. She has confirmed that Serbia will remain fully committed to implementing reforms in the continuation of European integration, and that it will particularly work on fulfilling and aligning the norms regarding chapters 23 and 24, i.e. judiciary, fight against crime and corruption, minority rights, media freedom. In that context, she has underlined the Government’s commitment to adopt and implement all recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding constitutional amendments in the area of judiciary. She has also informed him that the inclusive process of preparing the media strategy has been relaunched.

The Minister of European Integration believes that, during Austrian EU Council presidency, Serbia’s accession process will be continued through the opening of chapters for which Serbia is prepared at the technical level.

Jadranka Joksimović has assessed that, with the recently adopted Conclusions on enlargement, the EU General Affairs Council has sent a clear political message to everyone in the region that the Balkans is once again in EU’s focus, by which it has supported the European perspective of the Western Balkans, as had the Enlargement Strategy and the EC Report on Serbia’s progress. She has emphasised that this has also confirmed Serbia’s strong commitment to European integration.

Minister of European Integration has stressed that stability, on which Serbia insists, is extremely important for the region and that it affects the stability of the EU as well. She has pointed out that Serbia, as an EU candidate, is interested in finding an acceptable solution to the migrant crisis, confirming that Serbia will actively participate in finding it.

Chair of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee Eduard Kukan has emphasised that Serbia has been recognised as a country crucial to the stability and prosperity of the entire region and to the achievement of common European interests. He has stated that the EU recognises and welcomes Serbia’s active role in addressing important issues, and that it supports and stimulates reforms and European integration because they contribute to the development of the region, which is also in EU’s interest.

Kukan has pointed out that the Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee operates well and cooperates with Serbian members of the Assembly, adding that the European Parliament will continue to monitor and support Serbia’s European path in accordance with fulfilled criteria.
