This year, the European Integration Office, in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia and the EU Info Centre, celebrated Europe Day in Obrenovac, the town hit by severe flooding whose reconstruction was greatly helped by the European Union.
After the official opening of Students’ Games, organised on the first day of celebration, 8 May, for the students of the primary schools damaged in floods and reconstructed by the EU, the central event took place in Zorana Đinđića Square on the Europe Day itself, 9 May.
Head of Delegation of the EU to Serbia Michael Davenport and the Mayor of Obrenovac Miroslav Čučković were in the audience.
The programme consisted of the Collage of Choreographic Miniatures performed by the ballet studio Idea, a children’s play “The Adventures of Joe the Cat” performed by Belgrade’s Pan Theatre, a workshop for children and a play “Bunny, bunny” performed by the school of acting COTK TENT. This was followed by an outstanding concert of the Music Academy students, organised by the Guitar Art Fest.
The locals had the opportunity to find out more about the current process of European integration of Serbia and the policies of the European Union at the stands of the Serbian European Integration Office and the EU Info Centre.
Europe Day ended with a rock concert of two bands from Obrenovac, “Džepovi” and “Incomplete”, and one from Belgrade, “Sevdah Baby Live”.
Europe Day, 9 May, is celebrated in memory of 1950 when, at the proposal of the then-Foreign Minister of France Robert Schuman, a supranational organisation managing coal and steel industries, the predecessor of the modern European Union, was established.
